INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Position: Farm Intern Part-time
Organization: Fresh Roots Urban Farm
Location: Vancouver, BC (East Vancouver, Commercial Dr.)
Fresh Roots Urban Farm Society (Fresh Roots) strengthens urban food systems by growing neighborhood market gardens to help create equitable access to healthy food. As neighborhood farmers, we collaborate with our community to create food systems that are resilient, sustainable, and accessible to Vancouver’s diverse residents. Our goal is to help build equitable urban food systems for all.
Overview:
This is an internship position where you will have the opportunity to further your urban farming knowledge and small-scale community-engaged organization skills.
This position is part-time, minimum 24hrs/week from late-March through October. It offers you the opportunity to experience a full growing season as well as work in East Vancouver neighborhoods building reliable community food systems.
Activities for all interns may include, but are not limited to:
Seedling production, bed preparation, cultivation/weeding, transplanting, pest management, greenhouse management, drip irrigation installation and maintenance, harvesting, application of soil amendments, safe use of equipment, compost and worm compost maintenance, working with volunteers, help planning and facilitating farm workshops and events, maintenance and cleaning of tools, attending CSA pick-up locations, working in neighborhood schoolyards and backyards and our farm in Richmond, consistently engaging with the local community, food community, Vancouver School Board community.
Requirements:
- Model good work ethics, standards and punctuality with good morale and team spirit.
- Must pass a criminal record check.
- Able to withstand hard physical labour.
- Good communication skills, flexibility, teamwork, and a good sense of humour!
- Drivers license an asset..
